Reforming our eating culture is critical to reforming health care. More than 60% of our healthcare dollars are used to treat chronic preventable or non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as diabetes type II and cardiovascular diseases. Neither current health reform nor voluntary food movements are enough to bend the cost curve. The major risk factor for these diseases is the typical American diet. This presentation covers the evolution of the our eating culture; current understanding of why people overeat; comparisons of the US to other countries Health Care indicators; and how profits have become more important than public health in the US. A model for change, based on the success in reducing tobacco smoking and its related diseases, will be offered for discussion.

Even though extreme weather events are occurring throughout the world with greater frequency and with greater intensity due to global warming, the majority of Americans polled lately do not view it as a major problem that requires action. Statistics put out by the U. S. Department of Energy stated that in 2010 the number of tons of carbon dioxide pumped into the atmosphere increased 6% above previous levels. The AP headline called it the biggest jump ever seen in global warming gases; and yet this rapid and terrifying acceleration of global warming did not result in an effective international agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It seems that we are being led to collective self-annihilation as we allow the planet to heat past the point where we can deal with it.

Because members of the Environmental Priorities Network want to preserve a world that can sustain human life, they are presenting a public forum to alert local residents about the harm that is being done to people around the world and to future generations by our lack of action on global climate change. The Climate Crisis Forum will take place from 10 AM -1 PM, Saturday, January 21 @ PUC.

From 10 -11 AM, people can visit tables with information about local environmental groups and enjoy the light refreshments and drinks that will be provided.

At 11 AM, Nick Karno will speak about the increasing urgency of taking action on global climate change. Mr Karno is a member of the Climate Reality Team that has trained with Al Gore to speak about what must be done to bring the earth’s climate system back into balance. He is a Deputy LA City Attorney working in the Environmental Justice Unit.

We stand at a watershed moment for the South Bay! On Tuesday, November 22, Torrance became the final city (7 out of 7!) to adopt the Bicycle Plan we put our heart and soul into crafting for two years. This now-official blueprint for 214 miles of new bikeways will transform the livability of our cities by connecting families, friends, schools, and business.

The South Bay Bicycle Coalition couldn't have achieved this success without each and everyone of you volunteering, giving feedback at workshops, talking to your city council, and riding your bike. Your active participation made everything possible.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Marissa Christiansen, our fulltime initiative director, who worked tireless as our quarterback keeping cities, community, and planners collaborating to produce a phenomenal (and 350 page) plan. The staff and elected leadership in Redondo, El Segundo, Hermosa, Gardena, Lawndale, Manhattan, and Torrance have been phenomenal partners and we look forward to continuing to work with them to make the streets more welcome and safe for bike riders of all ages.

Please also give thanks to our all star cast of Board members past and present who have been the lynchpin of the organization. Joe Galliani, Julian Katz, Casey Beyers, Ann Hempelmann, Charlie Bean, Jim Hannon, Steve Montalto, Danny Hylands, and Steve Collins have brought their diverse talents together for a common purpose. They are the handlebars and the pedals behind each project we have undertaken from grant writing to websites to bike valets to parades to education to moving planet to plan passage.

Simple greywater systems require very little maintenance, but a small amount is needed! An hour or two a year can keep greywater systems well functioning and improve their effectiveness. In the workshop we'll review best practices for creating long lasting systems. We'll observe existing greywater systems that are between two and three years old, from washing machine, shower, and kitchen sink. Participants will practice balancing greywater flows, checking mulch basins, and doing any repairs needed on the system.We will also review greywater system design, calculating greywater flows, plant water requirements, and new greywater technologies.This is a hands-on workshop, please wear clothes and shoes for working. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope. This film will be followed by community discussion.

Moving Planet South Bay Attracts 48 Partners for Historic September 24 Event

The City of Redondo Beach has now joined Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach in endorsing and participating in Moving Planet South Bay on September 24 along with 45 different Beach City businesses, community organizations and local groups. The free, “Bikeable, Walkable, Livable!” festival is gaining increasing momentum towards its goal of demonstrating widespread support for the South Bay Bicycle Master Plan and the Vitality City Livability Plan.

Mayors of all three Beach Cities are encouraging their citizens to bike, walk, run, rollerblade or skateboard to the fossil free event on 13th Street between Valley Drive and Morningside Drive in Manhattan Beach which will be closed to motor vehicles during the 10:00 am to 2:00 pm festival.

Moving Planet South Bay is designed to offer Beach City residents and fans a chance to experience the benefits and improvements the South Bay Bicycle Master Plan and the Vitality City Livability Plan will bring their communities while offering them tools and resources to personally become more bikeable, walkable and livable.

Partnering with the three Beach Cities and working to organize the event are the South Bay Bicycle Coalition, Healthways Blue Zone| Vitality City, Transition South Bay LA, and the South Bay 350 Climate Action Group.

Metlox Plaza on 13th Street in Manhattan Beach is the setting for a series of free workshops, demonstrations, and presentations including yoga, tai chi, zumba exercise, dancing, youth bike safety, beekeeping, edible gardening, stretching for runners and walkers, gardening aerobics and more.

Over 40 Moving Planet South Bay partner booths will line 13th Street with interactive experiences, workshops, demonstrations, lessons, displays, many prizes and giveaways, and free services including dance lessons, composting lessons, bicycle parking, bike adjustments, bike safety inspections and minor repairs, games and activities for kids, meditation instruction, urban chicken raising tips, nutritional advice and direction, environmental and sustainability information and resources and expert advice on local biking, skating, running and walking in the South Bay.

Also embracing Moving Planet South Bay’s support for the Bicycle Master Plan and the Livability Plan is the downtown Manhattan Beach Professional Association who has created a “Bike/Walk-Friendly Business District” for the event with 29 downtown establishments offering discounts and special incentives for attendees.

“Every business, organization and group participating is donating their time and expertise for the good of the community and because of their enthusiasm for getting the Bicycle Master Plan and Livablity Plan passed,” says Joe Galliani, one of the event organizers and a South Bay Bicycle Coalition board member. “People here recognized this is our time to seize the moment and guarantee a better future.”

On September 24, 2011 in towns and cities all around the world, people will be turning out for “Moving Planet” to demonstrate their concerns about climate change and their support for fossil-free solutions in their communities. Here in the South Bay we have an extraordinary opportunity to embrace two ready-to-roll sustainable solutions that not only address climate change, but will also improve our health, well-being and the livability of our communities -- The South Bay Bicycle Master Plan and the Vitality City Livability Plan.

Both plans are up for City Council approval in the Beach Cities this fall and on September 24 citizens of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach will walk, bike, run, rollerblade and skateboard to our “Moving Planet South Bay – Bikeable, Walkable, Livable!” event.

On August 2, 2011 the Manhattan Beach City Council endorsed our “Moving Planet South Bay” event and approved the use of the 13^th Street Farmers Market site as the venue on September 24. We are very excited to be partnering with the City of Manhattan Beach, Vitality Cities, the South Bay Bicycle Coalition and South Bay 350 Climate Action Group in planning this rally and celebration. Many more local partners will be joining us over the coming weeks.

At this fun, free, uplifting event we’ll demonstrate our support for the Bicycle Master Plan and Vitality City Livability Plan and connect with others who share our passion and interest in creating more livable neighborhoods with less pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and giving our children, grandchildren, parents and grandparents a better way of life.

The September 24 Moving Planet South Bay event will teach, entertain, encourage and motivate people. It will give them an opportunity to have their voices heard. And it will allow individuals, families, organizations and businesses to get involved and make a positive difference for the future of our cities and our quality of life.

Join us for one day or for entire weekend workshop. But on Saturday and Sunday be sure to wear work clothes and be prepared to get learn as you work. The weekend workshop will cover land planning; how to build the design; irrigation; soil fertility management; composting and vermi-composting; mulching; permaculture lasagna; planting annual and perennial herbs, vegetables, fruit and nut trees; and applied learning with micro fowl (chicks).

This weekend workshop will be led by Dr. Bill Roley, the director of the Permaculture Institute of Southern California. Dr. Roley is an applied ecologist, environmental instructor and consultant. He also designs strategies to improve sustainable resources for homes, organizations, governments and businesses. He heads the Ecological Restoration Certificate Program at Saddleback College and teaches biology at Soka University.

David Holmgren, an Australian ecologist, coined the word Permaculture in the mid 1970’s. Dr. Bill Mollison, an environmental psychology professor, popularized the use of this word.

It is a contraction of "permanent agriculture" or "permanent culture." Permaculturalists design ecological human habitats and food production systems. Permaculture is a land use and community building movement, which strives for the harmonious integration of human dwellings, microclimate, annual and perennial plants, animals, soils, and water into stable, productive communities. South Bay Bicycle Coalition Master Plan Workshops

Our friends at South Bay Bicycle Coalition will be holding workshops in each of the seven cities affected by the Master Plan -- El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Gardena, and Lawndale -- and will start on June 20th in Manhattan Beach. This will be the last chance for community members to give input before the plan is finalized and presented to each city council. Community input is vital to a successful plan. Attend a workshop and play an important role in shaping the South Bay’s Master Plan.

So Right So Smart profiles companies on the cutting edge of more sustainable business practices who are proving that being environmentally friendly is both good for the earth and good for business. The primary focus of the film is a behind-the-scenes look at the transformation of Interface Inc., a global carpet manufacturer led by Ray Anderson, one of the early pioneers of green business practices. In 1994, Anderson read Paul Hawken's The Ecology of Commerce and had an epiphany: the planet was in crisis and his business was contributing to the problem. Since then, Anderson has spearheaded an often-challenging effort to transform Interface to a "restorative enterprise," and has become an inspiration to other businesses. Then we will share our positive visions of what we imagine a more sustainable South Bay to look like. This event is open to everyone and is multi-generational. Our goal is to engage people of all ages from youth to elders, share knowledge and build community. Bring your favorite dish and the recipe to share with others. South Bay Toxic Rescue Tour (Green Sanctuary event)

When: Saturday, March 12, 2011, 8:30a – 1:00p

Please arrive at 8:15am. Bus leaves promptly at 8:30 am.

Where: Pacific Unitarian Church

5621 Montemalaga Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275 map

Cost: $5 (to cover bus rental) however no one turned away

Max: 48 people

This guided tour will begin at the Pacific Unitarian Church. The bus will leave promptly at 8:30 am to tour LA toxic hotspots within the cities of Wilmington, Vernon, Huntington Park and other areas of Los Angeles. The tour will end back at the Pacific Unitarian Church at 1:00 pm. All are welcome to meet afterward at the South Coast Botanical Gardens for picnic lunch provided. RSVP to johntippet@cox.net.
